Satellite TV also has cheaper DVR services than cable TV does, on average. With satellite TV, households can install a satellite dish to receive internet service and TV service, even when their area isn't as grid-connected. This typically is the case in rural areas without cable TV wiring. People looking for live TV programming often choose satellite TV when cable isn't offered in their area. However, not all TV viewers will prefer cable TV over satellite TV. Why Choose Satellite TV Instead of Cable?Ĭable TV is usually the more affordable option with fewer service interruptions than satellite TV. These boundaries will aid in thunderstorm development later today. This will be followed by a second wave that is difficult to pinpoint threat locations, as storm development will depend upon where boundaries are located that are left behind by wave one. Damaging wind gusts and hail are the main threats. The main threat area will generally be across the western half of the state for the remainder of this morning. Wave one will bring a cluster of storms moving from west to east across Alabama this morning. Yet another very active 24 hours (and beyond) is in store for the state. I love the global nature of it.By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency That is cool to me and that is ultimately what drove me in that direction versus working in a local weather service office or local station. You think of any big typhoon or heat wave or earthquake over the past 15 years, and I was a part of covering it in one way or another. I get to cover pretty much every interesting weather and climate extreme in the world in some way or another, be it television or digitally or planning coverage. What is your favorite part of your job today? I knew that I’d presented my research in front of scientists and won an award for it and that gave me the confidence to present later. Also, the symposium was kind of like a mini-academic conference and so when it came time for me to present the American Meteorological Society (AMS) national conference, I had that experience in my back pocket. It was just really cool as a college kid to be able to sit in the office of the director of the NWS and see how it worked at the highest level. They gave me a little medal and a book about navigating the world of federal service and operational meteorology. I actually won an award for best presentation and I got to go to headquarters and meet the director of National Weather Service and NOAA leadership. I really enjoyed the trip to Silver Spring, Maryland, for the scholar conference and presentations. What was your favorite or most memorable moment from your Hollings experience? You never know where you are going to end up and the field is more connected, and smaller, than you think. I know the right person to talk to and reach back out to researchers to learn about something I got a press release on. I did this because I wasn’t exactly sure what field I wanted to find myself in, but I still use those contacts in my job today as a communicator. I networked as widely as I could and as many places as possible. Everyone talks about “networking is so important,” but some people keep their network too narrow. Keep your network open and as broad as possible. What advice do you have for current and future Hollings scholars? I am able to go comfortably between those two and my Hollings experience is one piece that helped me be able to do so. They’re very connected - you have researchers and then you have your boots on the ground and they don’t communicate all that well - they sort of live different lives. Understanding the intersection of research and operations when it comes to meteorology and climate science, especially being able to synthesize research and apply it to operational techniques, is essential. Working with and becoming comfortable with academic research helps me figure out what is important in research and communicate that effectively, which is something I do everyday. Do you still use skills learned during your internship or other aspects of your Hollings experience today? Even though I didn’t take a job with NOAA, Hollings gave me extremely valuable experience and context that I still use to this day. But, after Hollings, I explored an academic career path. Like many meteorology students, I knew what I saw on TV, so I knew that I could be a broadcast meteorologist. The research I did during my internship gave me the experience and the confidence to do things that weren’t necessarily along my planned career path. Hollings gave me more experience in the operational and research fields in meteorology. How did Hollings impact your career path? I officially joined the CNN World Weather Department in 2008 after graduating with my master’s degree. I also continued to work freelance at CNN to keep the door open for future work. Those possibilities led me to go to graduate school at Georgia Tech after my graduation in 2006. That REU experience led me to Hollings and the research I did during my Hollings internship introduced me to new career possibilities. I think this probably made me competitive for my REU with the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma in 2005. First, I had an internship at CNN doing Global Weather News. I had a couple of important career launching opportunities in undergraduate at Georgia Tech. Kishu mandarins are about the size of a walnut, and other than their size, they are similar to other mandarins. However, they are the most common mandarin used for the canned mandarins you buy at the grocery store. If you live in an area that grows them, it's worth seeking out at a farmers market. Like other citrus, mandarins don't get sweeter after they are picked. Fresh Satsuma can show up in October if they are grown near you, but they aren't often shipped long distances due to their fragility. Mandarins are in season during the cooler months, from roughly November through April. The most convenient snacking citrus tastes a whole lot better when you get them in-season and when they've had more time to ripen on the tree. In addition to that, you can use cuticle oil every day to maintain the health of your nails and cuticles. When doing household chores like cleaning and put washing, wear protective gloves. To make your acrylic nails last longer, avoid prolonged contact with water. When getting acrylic nail extensions removed, proper gentle removal is key to steer clever of injuries and infection to the nail bed. Make sure the tools used in the process are properly sterilized. The process involves applying a lot of chemicals, but when done properly and with proper ventilation, acrylic nails should not pose risks. We also recommend taking breaks in between to limit the damage. If you want to maintain your nail health, it’s best to get it done by a known nail technician. According to experts, acrylic nails can actually damage and weaken natural nails when used long-term. Some people get acrylic nails to have stronger, natural nails. The resulting mixture is then applied atop the natural nails which then forms a hard protective layer to lengthen and define your nails. The application process entails creating artificial nails by musing together a powder polymer with a liquid monomer. Plus, gel nails involve curing the nails in a UV lamp to strengthen them. The main difference between acrylic nails and gel nails is that gel nails don’t require mixing two different products to create a fluid. If you’ve opted for extensions, the nail technician will apply a gel-like fluid to artificial nails on your nail bed and then put it on your natural nails to lengthen your claws. Alternatively, you can get the gel nail paint applied directly to your natural nail bed. If you want longer nails, you can opt for an extension. Each layer is then cured under a UV light in order to dry it out. The gel manicure involves applying layers of the base, builder, and top coat. Gel nails belong to the acrylic nails category but they are way more glossy and shiny in appearance. How Are Acrylic Nails Different From Gel Nails? If you want to add extra length, you can get a tip glued to the end of your nail bed and then get the acrylic gel over the top. For babes who have brittle nails that break easily and who find it hard to grow out their own nails, acrylic nails can give you the best canvas to try the trending nail art designs. Whether you want to enhance your nail shape or extend the length of your nails - acrylic nail extensions are one of the easiest ways to do so. With Tower of Power, David Garibaldi's sleek percolation helped broaden the audience for James Brown's turn-of-the-Seventies rhythmic experiments, and his rhythmic intelligence was a key element in the creation of the Bay Area soul-funk outfit's hit "What Is Hip?" "It was his idea to get Rocko to play those sixteenth notes on the bass," Tower of Power bandleader Emilio Castillo said. Image Credit: Chris Walter/WireImage/Getty In later life, French would lead his own Magic Band, channeling the Captain's vocals in a strange sort of karmic payback for his rocky initial stint. Drumbo's style only grew more advanced on 1970 follow-up Lick My Decals Off, Baby, perhaps the best example on record of his clattering and chaotic yet fiercely controlled approach. "Never have so many worked so hard for so little ," said French of the sessions that produced the album, adding, "I've never received a dime for it." During Replica's recording, a group visit to a Salvador Dali exhibit "changed concept of drums" and inspired French's knack for rhythmic superimposition. French served as music director for the Magic Band's avant-garde masterpiece Trout Mask Replica, though he came away embittered. John "Drumbo" French joined Captain Beefheart's Magic Band in 1966, bringing with him a toms-heavy, polyrhythmic style that would become as integral to the group as Don Van Vliet's modernist-blues croak. Then he'd do his drum solo, and it would be like World War III had broken out." They weren't the correct weight, but were sufficient when he held them upside down using the fat end. In a 1999 interview, Emerson shared memories of a rehearsal for which Powell assembled his massive kit, but then realized he'd forgotten his sticks: "He considered using some fallen branches from my orchard, until a local farmer drove into town to get some proper ones. Though he regularly anchored his own projects, Powell is best remembered as an asset to groups like Rainbow and Whitesnake as one third of the short-lived Emerson, Lake & Powell and as a guiding force in a critically maligned but undeniably heavy latter-day Black Sabbath. If you want to throw a cymbal at us, please do so in the comments section.įrom the time he burst upon the scene as part of the Jeff Beck Group in 1970, Colin Trevor "Cozy" Powell earned a reputation as a first-call journeyman drummer and session hand, a hard-hitting power player vital to the development of English hard rock and heavy metal. That list is its own monument we hope to build someday soon. This meant leaving out dozens of essential jazz artists such as Max Roach and Roy Haynes, whose innovations inspired many of the players you’ll read about below. One important caveat: we used rock and pop as our rubric, so a drummer’s work needed to directly impact that world (as we define it, of course) to make the list. once told Modern Drummer magazine, “I guess I’m not really a Modern Drummer drummer.” But the unshowy contribution he made to the band he played in is worth more than a pile of dusty VHS drum-instruction tapes (not that we couldn’t watch that YouTube video where Jeff Porcaro explains how he came up with the “Rosanna” groove until our eyeballs turn to ash). That means that along with master blasters such as John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and Neil Peart, and athletic soundpainters like Stewart Copeland and Bill Bruford, you’ll find no-frills-brilliant session guys you’ve been loving on the radio for years like Jim Keltner and Steve Gadd, early rock & roll beat definers like Jerry Allison and Fred Below, in-the-cut funk geniuses and brickhouse disco titans like Clyde Stubblefield and Earl Young, and unorthodox punk minimalists like Maureen Tucker and Tommy Ramone. In coming up with our list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time, we valued nuance and musicality over chops and flash, celebrating players who knew the value of aiding a great song more than hogging up a show with a silly solo. So this is our epic chance to give the drummer some. Bruce Springsteen once said of Max Weinberg, his impossibly reliable drummer for over four decades, “I ask and he delivers for me night after night.” Leave it to Bruce to come up with the perfect tribute to music’s true working-stiff warriors - the guys way in the back, behind all that stuff, giving the music its spine and drive, its cohesion and contour and a huge chunk of its personality, often without getting the credit they deserve. Ever hear any dumb-guitarist jokes? Exactly. |
